What we’re talking about:
My guest today is Zach, and he recently completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) at Monash University. We discuss the reality of creating good study habits and how to explore your options when you’re still not sure what you want to do when VTAC applications are due. Zach also talks us through his course and goes into detail about how internships work.
Creating good study habits
Zach explains that he had some trouble early in VCE because it was the first time in his schooling where he’d actually had to do some homework and study at home. Couple this with not knowing what he wanted to do, and it made it difficult for him to have the motivation to do the work and get the results he really wanted.
Exploring course options
When VTAC applications were due, Zach still wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He talks us through the decisions he made along the way and how he made each choice that led to the course and career he’s in now. Zach started in Science/Arts and ended up with a Bachelor of Engineering by following his interests along the way, and he’s really happy in his career. His experience helped him discover what he didn’t want to do on the way to working out what he did want to do.
Software Engineering
Zach explains what Software Engineering is and discusses what the course is like, including the internship he did as part of the course and how valuable that was. He also distinguishes between Software Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology for those trying to choose between them.
