What we’re talking about:

My guest today is Ria, and she is currently in the process of making a shift in her career from Pharmacy to Audiology. As well as talking about the courses you need to do to work in these areas and Ria’s career as a pharmacist, we also discuss the University Extension program that students can enrol in to extend their studies in high school, and the similarities between the two careers that Ria has noticed so far.

Pharmacy

Ria studied the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at Monash University after doing work experience at a pharmacy in Year 10 and really enjoying Chemistry in VCE. She discusses the range of subjects and topics she did in the course, as well as the various placements that allowed her to explore what a career in pharmacy could look like. Ria really enjoyed her regional placement and the community feel of working in a rural community, and she has worked in a regional community as a pharmacist for 3 years. She details the work that she does and other tasks that pharmacists do.

Communication and working with people from all walks of life

All the areas that Ria has been interested in (pharmacy, physiotherapy and audiology) require you to be able to communicate really clearly with other medical professionals and speak their language, and then also to be able to get this information across to patients or clients from all walks of life. This skill is so important and can make or break your career.

Audiology

Ria is currently embarking on a career change and is studying a Master of Clinical Audiology at the University of Melbourne. She shares great information about how to apply and the prerequisites you need, what you study in the course, the placement opportunities and what a career as an audiologist can look like.
