What we’re talking about:
Today I’m chatting with Kaysia who completed a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science majoring in Formulation Science at Monash University. We discuss knowing the prerequisites you need for your course and using your vision for the future to motivate you, her course and the various career opportunities available, and how her course prepared her to secure her first job.
Completing prerequisite subjects in high school
Kaysia talks about having to do Maths Methods when it wasn’t her strength because it was a prerequisite for the tertiary courses she wanted to do, and I share a similar story about English. We discuss some strategies you can use if you find yourself in a similar situation to get the results you need to pursue courses and careers you’re interested in.
Pharmaceutical Science
Kaysia explains really clearly the difference between Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacy, what Pharmaceutical Science actually is and how the majors you can choose from within the course correspond to the different steps in the drug development process. She majored in Formulation Science and explains how this involves formulating different products from paint to flavours, cosmetics and medication.
Employability
Within the course at Monash, they have a week called Employability Week each year. Throughout this week, students learn how to write resumes that stand out, how to present yourself in an interview and what the industry is looking for when they’re hiring graduates. As part of the course, students also apply to different companies and practise these skills for their internship, and many students end up working at these companies after they graduate.
