What we’re talking about:

Today on Course and Career Chat I’m chatting with Jacinta, who completed a Bachelor of Interior Design at Collarts. She was initially planning to study overseas, but after things didn’t go to plan, she reflected on what she enjoyed doing and realised that she actually wanted to study interior design instead. She felt great about Collarts as soon as she was interviewed and received a conditional offer before results were released. Jacinta gives us great insights into what her course was like and also what she’s been doing in her career so far.

Pursuing Basketball Scholarships in the US

Jacinta shares that she was on track to apply for scholarships to US colleges to pursue playing basketball. She was given the advice to do maths and science in VCE to ensure she would have the GPA to be accepted, even though she really enjoyed Studio Arts and Media. Jacinta was working with a company and creating a portfolio to show her skills when she got injured during a game, making her question whether this was the pathway she really wanted to go down anyway.

Interior Design at Collarts

Jacinta explains the process of applying to Collarts, including creating a portfolio during VCE and what the interview process looks like. She felt welcome right away and loved her course, and Jacinta goes into detail about what she studied, the structure of the course, and all of the opportunities she had throughout her course to get an idea of what a career in interior design would look like, including amazing optional experiences and a compulsory placement at the end.

Careers in Interior Design

Jacinta highlights the fact that at 20 years old she’s already qualified and has a full time job doing something she loves due to the structure of the course (6 trimesters over 2 years). She goes into detail about the types of things she works on day-to-day as an interior designer. She also runs her own business (link below) creating prints on acrylic. Jacinta also shares that a friend who completed the course with her now works on the business side, using her knowledge of interior design and her business skills to promote and grow interior design businesses.
