What we’re talking about:
My guest today on Course and Career Chat is Laura, and she is currently completing a Bachelor of Forensic Science majoring in Crime Scene Investigation at the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS). She shares how her interest in forensic science has developed over time, and how she explored her interests through various similar courses before focusing on this one. She also discusses the ways she’s been able to get a sense of what a career in forensic science could look like.
Being interested in “morbid” topics
From an early age, Laura remembers being interested in death, the human body and the darker side of humanity, and she noticed in particular other people’s discomfort when she brought it up. She also discusses the impact of tv shows like CSI and Bones on the profession, and shares a lot about the things that interest her about forensic science.
Criminology, Psychology, Mortuary Practice, Forensic Science
Laura has tried out a few different degrees on the way to where she is now. She started with a double degree in Criminology and Psychological Science at Deakin, but she recognised that she really wanted to find out more about how cases were handled after a crime was committed rather than looking at preventing crime. She then went to Sydney and started a Bachelor of Medical Science majoring in Mortuary Practice at Western Sydney University before moving to UTS to study Forensic Science. She had a range of experiences along the way in each of these areas and shares what she’s learnt.
Studying forensic science
Laura talks about the types of subjects you do in a forensic science degree, as well as the opportunities she’s had to listen to experts in the field. She shares what she learnt, and how students can get some hands on experience in the area when security around this type of work is so important. She also mentions cases she’s particularly interested in and where things can go wrong in a case.
