Today my guest is Lydia, and she has just completed a Bachelor of Design majoring in Architecture at The University of Melbourne. In this episode we talk about how important it is to get the information you need so that you can make really good decisions about what you want to do next after you finish school, looking into courses to make sure that you’ll be able to study the things you like, and the experiences that Lydia has had so far to give her a taste of what a career in architecture might look like.

Finding out more to make an informed decision

Lydia tells us about the conversations that she had leading up to when she had to make a decision about what course and career she should pursue. She had a few interests and took the opportunity to speak to people who were in these roles so that she had a really clear idea about what they did and how they spent their time, making it much easier to make an informed decision.

Choosing a course that suits your needs

Because Lydia had a broad range of interests, she looked at courses all over Australia and found one that allowed her to continue to do some study in areas outside of architecture that she enjoyed. She also recognised that doing these subjects would round out her knowledge and allow her to apply it to her study of design. With this in mind, the Bachelor of Design at The University of Melbourne suited Lydia and allowed her to explore more of the things she wanted to study.

What a career in architecture can look like

Lydia has had two placements in very different aspects of architecture and she explains what those experiences were like and how they helped her get a really good understanding of how she can apply what she’s learning at uni to her career.
