What we’re talking about:

My guest this week is Tiana, and she recently graduated from a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University majoring in Anthropology and Human Rights. We discuss so much in this episode, including great information about how to network as a uni student, what it’s like to study anthropology and human rights, and the types of work that Tiana and her fellow graduates are pursuing.

Moving from regional Victoria to Melbourne

Tiana shares that she was the first in her family to finish high school and go to uni, and she’s grateful that her parents were really supportive of her and encouraged her to pursue whatever she wanted. This gave her the freedom to try out different VCE subjects so that she could explore her interests, and when it came time to apply for uni she chose based on the location of Monash as well as the range of courses offered there.

Networking as a uni student

Tiana shares really valuable information about how she used LinkedIn to network while she was at uni. She describes it as a “landing page for her career” and explains exactly how she used it to find out about volunteer and work experience opportunities in her field. This allowed her to gain experience, learn more about what she wanted to do, and have insightful conversations with mentors working in her field, helping her learn more about how their careers had progressed.

Anthropology and Human Rights

Tiana explains what anthropology is and we explore how it’s related to the types of subjects that she was interested in throughout VCE. She shares a lot about the types of work experience she completed as a uni student, as well as explaining what her day-to-day work looks like working in mental health policy with the Department of Education, and what other graduates are doing now in their careers.
