What we’re talking about:

In this episode you’ll hear from two guests: Paris is the managing director of McCormick Foods, and Yeliz is a sensory and consumer scientist at McCormick Foods. Paris shares his insights about the food industry, and then I interview Yeliz about her pathway from school through the Bachelor of Health Sciences at Deakin University into her roles in food science.

Food and Fibre Industry

Paris explains what McCormick Foods does and how the focus at McCormick foods is on sustainability and ethical production. He explains just how big the industry is in Australia, and gives us an insight into what it’s like to work in the food industry. Lastly, he lists a huge range of careers that you can do within the food industry from manufacturing and engineering to marketing and finance to product development, being a chef and sensory testing and tasting.

Bachelor of Health Sciences - Food Studies and Nutrition

Even as a small child, Yeliz had seen herself working as a scientist in a lab, and as she got older she discovered a passion for Chemistry and Physics. She chose to complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences at Deakin University majoring in Food Studies and Nutrition, and after completing an internship that focused more on Nutrition, she recognised that she really did prefer working in a lab, testing things and being more hands on. Yeliz shares great information about her course and the internship she completed.

Working as a Sensory and Consumer Scientist

Yeliz shares her experiences in her career, where she started as a quality control officer and is now working as a sensory and consumer scientist at McCormick Foods. She explains what’s involved in both of these roles, and clearly describes what it’s like to support product development and training and working with consumers around sensory tastings.
