What we’re talking about:

Today on Course and Career Chat my guest is the Head of the Photography Department at Collarts. Rikki is here to share his career story from high school to teaching photography at various tertiary institutions, and he also gives us so much information about the brand new Bachelor of Photography. He shares everything you need to know about the course including what you’ll learn, how the course is delivered, and the unique opportunities available when you study at Collarts.

Becoming a photographer

Despite loving Art in high school, Rikki didn’t go straight into studying photography after he finished school. He went travelling with his girlfriend and working, and when Rikki took her to an interview at a university, he saw a pamphlet for the photography course and thought nothing of it. A few days later he had a moment of realisation in the Queensland desert, quit his job, enrolled in the course and never looked back. What followed was a successful and varied career in photography that eventually led to an opportunity to teach photography at university.

New Bachelor of Photography course at Collarts

The first intake of students has just started in the new Diploma and Bachelor of Photography. Rikki explains how the course works from a practical sense including the structure of the course, how it’s delivered and what subjects you’ll study. He also gives an insight into what types of photography you can specialise in and how the course is specifically set up to help students not only know how to be a great photographer, but also gets them ready with the experience and portfolio necessary to get work and start their career.

Why Collarts?

Rikki gives us an insight into what it’s like to work and study at Collarts. He explains how being around like-minded creatives can be fun and build a feeling of connectedness, but also allows for unique opportunities for students to work on projects with students in other courses, adding to the experience and giving students an edge when they’re starting their careers.
