What we’re talking about:
My guest this week, Carly, is currently completing a Bachelor of Business (Professional) at Swinburne. She shares her experience with the course and in particular her professional year, which is a 12 month internship that she’s undertaken as part of the course.
How to decide if Business is for you
Business and Commerce are very popular courses, even though it can be difficult to get an understanding of what it is while you’re in high school. While there are VCE subjects like Accounting, Economics and Business Management, they aren’t prerequisites for uni courses and lots of students pursue Business or Commerce without having studied them. Carly talks about how her parents noticed that she was interested in business and would make comments about different businesses from a young age. She also had some business experience at the age of 13 or 14 when she started a small business with a friend. It was interesting to hear how she made links between her different interests to work out what to pursue once she finished school. We also discuss the similarities and differences between Business and Commerce degrees.
Professional and Applied Courses
At Swinburne, you can choose to complete a Bachelor of Business or a Bachelor of Business (Professional), which includes a 12 month internship in the third year of the course. Carly loved the idea of being able to get real experience as part of the course and understood that this would be a point of difference later on when she would be applying for graduate positions. She gives us a great insight into what her professional year has been like, including finding placements, the application process, the type of work she’s been doing, and the support she’s received from Swinburne and her workplace coordinator throughout the year.
Business at Swinburne
Carly talks about some of the subjects that she’s done at uni, particularly related to Marketing and Human Resources which are her two main areas of interest. She makes links between what she studied in VCE and what she’s doing now, and outlines the systems that Swinburne puts in place to support students with understanding the coursework.
